"Malkoshenu" (מָלְטָה נַפְשֵׁנוּ) – Our Soul Escaped
The keyword מָלְטָה נַפְשֵׁנוּ (maltah nafshenu, 'our soul escaped') is a metaphor and a promise: like a bird released from a trap, every salvation in Jewish history is a taste of the ultimate geula. The Talmud (Pesachim 118a) reads this Psalm as a song of faith in moments when rescue feels impossible, when the world seems arrayed against us.
Even while overseas, your learning is a participation in the unfolding redemption. The Midrash Tehillim says that each time a Jew remembers Hashem’s past salvations, they plant seeds for future ones. In times of collective crisis, this memory becomes our greatest weapon.
Practical Application: When reading this perek, pause on the moment of escape. Where in your life, or in the life of those in Israel, can you notice moments of unexpected help or hope? Practice gratitude for these, and mention them in your prayers today.
