Elul - Month of preparation and repentance

The month of Elul is here, starting this week. Everything and everyone is full of anticipation, getting ready for the High Holidays, and beginning the new Hebrew year. Elul is a time of reflection, a month set aside for introspection, looking inside, and Teshuva - repentance in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The word "Elul" itself can be seen as an acronym for "Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li"—"I am my Beloved’s, and my Beloved is mine"—a reminder of the deep, loving relationship between us and the Divine.

One of the most powerful practices this month is the recitation of Selichot, special prayers of repentance and supplication. The word Selichot comes from the Hebrew root s-l-ch, meaning forgiveness. These prayers are a way of reaching out, acknowledging our shortcomings, and asking for Divine mercy. They are recited in the quiet of the early morning, a time when the world is still and our hearts can open more fully to the process of teshuvah—returning to our true selves and our Creator.

Selichot are not just about asking for forgiveness; they are about reawakening the soul. They remind us that change is possible and that no matter how far we may have strayed, the gates of repentance are always open. As we say the words of these ancient prayers, we connect with generations of Jews who have stood in the same place, who have felt the same yearning, the same hope for renewal.

In this month of Elul, let us take the time to pause, to listen to the call of the shofar, which is traditionally sounded every morning. Let its voice stir us from complacency, and let Selichot guide us on a path of genuine return. This is a month to heal relationships, to mend what is broken within ourselves, and to draw closer to the Source of all life.

This last year had been very hard, for the Jewish people and all over the world. We start wishing that the new year will be better and different. As we enter this season of reflection, may open hearts be open, and may we be ready to embrace the possibilities of a new year.

In the meantime - there is a whole month of of special songs and prayers of the Selichot traditional tunes. We will share with you one every week, starting with the most famous and beloved Adon HaSelichot - Master of Forgiveness. The lyrics follow the Hebrew Aleph Beth and are very meaningful. Watch in this video thousands of people singing this song together at the Kotel, the Western Wall.
